It was fitting that yesterday’s 5-1 win over Houston, the penultimate game of the Mets’ sorry season suffered through a rain delay: The entire injury-riddled campaign has been like water torture that just wouldn’t end.
Manuel is determined to make sure Wright does just that, admitting the latter developed “phobias” — Manuel’s word, not ours — after getting beaned by a 93 mph Matt Cain fastball on Aug. 15. He’s hit just .242 since, looking uneasy at the plate and admitting he still thinks about the beaning.
So, with Wright showing modest improvement in his last three games — 5-for-12 with three doubles and three RBIs — Manuel didn’t want to risk his star getting drilled by errant Yorman Bazardo (19 BB in 27 1/3 innings pitched).

The Mets may finally be getting the hang of this public relations thing. The team announced Thursday that the average season ticket for 2010 would cost 10 percent less than it did this season, with cuts of as much as 20 percent in some locations. According to the team, every season ticket holder will wind up with a lower invoice than they had this year, although per-game ticket prices will remain the same in some instances.
The Mets say that the decision was made in deference to the economy, which is a lot easier than saying that we’re charging you less because of how awful we were this season. The economic realities of 2009 were certainly a consideration, but someone in the Mets realized that they’ve got a pretty ticked off fanbase these days and keeping them in the building was going to take more than the promise that things would better next year when all the players were healthy.
That was true even before the news that Jose Reyes tore his hamstring became public knowledge, but was twice as true when the ticket pricing announcement was actually made. One of the linchpins that the Mets could use as a selling point for a brighter tomorrow is now a gigantic question mark as the offseason gets underway, raising the possibility that the Mets could be looking for help at shortstop in addition to all of the other holes that need filling around the league.

Mets shortstop Jose Reyes took indoor batting practice before Monday’s game against Atlanta and still holds out hope for a return to the field before the season ends, according to the New York Daily News.
Reyes, who has not played since May 20 and was diagnosed with a complete tear of his right hamstring last month, told the Daily News that he will continue taking batting practice for the remainder of the week, and will have a key running session on the field Friday. Should the running session go well, Reyes told the paper he will attempt to play in one or the two final games next week

John Maine spent his pregame hours Tuesday eating nachos, flipping through his new Dan Brown novel and quizzing Pedro Feliciano on how he spent his off-day — all before heading outside for a light throwing session. Quickly and efficiently, Maine has assimilated back into big league clubhouse culture.
Now it’s just a matter of assimilating back into the rotation. Maine, fresh off his first three innings since June, will pitch again Sunday against the Nationals. And he should round out the year as a member of an evolving Mets rotation.
This week, the Mets will proceed with a six-man rotation: Pat Misch on Tuesday, followed by Bobby Parnell, Nelson Figueroa, Mike Pelfrey, Tim Redding and Maine. Once that stretch is complete, manager Jerry Manuel will likely remove one of the six from the rotation in order to give the other five more regular work over the final two weeks of the season.

The Mets struck early in Tuesday’s series opener with the Rockies, but their offense was too often inactive while their pitching proved porous in an 8-3 loss, their 11th in the past 15 games.
The Mets jumped to an early lead against the Rockies, with Angel Pagan singling from the leadoff spot to open the first. Pagan was thrown out at second when Luis Castillo followed by lining a would-be single to center field on a hit-and-run. Pagan had a great jump and rounded second before starting back to first, thinking the ball might have been caught. Going back over second toward first reactivated the force at second, and he was thrown out on a fielder’s choice, robbing Castillo of a hit and the Mets of a runner in scoring position.
“He lost sight of the ball, didn’t pick up the coaches and I guess his brain locked up on him,” manager Jerry Manuel said. “We’ve done that a number of times this season, kind of shoot ourselves in the foot on the bases to some degree.”

The injury-ravaged Mets got some good news from the trainer’s table on Monday, as the club cleared center fielder Carlos Beltran to begin a rehab assignment without his knee brace.
Beltran, out since June 21 with a bone bruise in his right knee, was examined by the Mets’ medical director, Dr. David Altchek, in Manhattan on Monday morning. He is now scheduled to play for Class A Brooklyn on Wednesday night.
Beltran is hitting .336 with eight home runs and 40 RBIs in 62 games for the Mets this season. The 32-year-old will have two guaranteed years left on his contract after 2009, at $18.5 million each.

Billy Wagner has been in the Mets’ clubhouse since Sunday, and the closer, who underwent Tommy John ligament-replacement surgery last September, is getting a little eager.
“It’s not much fun to be healthy and watching,” Wagner said before Wednesday’s game with the Braves. “When you’re healthy and watching, it’s kind of depressing.” Wagner is back and healthy, 11 months after he last pitched in a game for the Mets. He is scheduled to be activated from the disabled list either Thursday or Friday.

Based on the recommendations of several doctors and specialists, the Mets placed David Wright on the 15-day disabled list with post-concussion symptoms following Sunday’s 5-4 win over the Giants.
General manager Omar Minaya said the decision was made when he spoke with the specialist and Wright during Sunday’s game.
Wright was released from the Hospital for Special Surgery on Sunday morning after revisiting with the neurologist who diagnosed him with his condition, which mainly involves a headache. The four-time All-Star — who received an apologetic voice mail from Giants starter Matt Cain on Saturday night — is currently resting at home, and Wright is expected to rejoin his teammates at Citi Field in the early part of this week.
