The emotions were understandably intense for Eli Manning, who grew up just a few miles from the Superdome yet had never played in the building his father, Archie, toiled in during the 1970s and ’80s.
Coming out of the tunnel in the moments before the game Sunday, he admitted to being more pumped up than usual.
“It’s a special moment for me to play in New Orleans, to be able to play in my hometown,” he said. “It’s something I was excited about.”
Unfortunately for Manning, the most enjoyable part of his day came before the game; after a 48-27 loss to his hometown team, the Giants’ quarterback left the Superdome crestfallen.
Manning had his moments — there was a 15-yard TD pass to Mario Manningham in the second that cut the Saints’ lead to 27-17. A TD pass to Brandon Jacobs in the fourth would have made it 41-24, but it was negated by a Shaun O’Hara holding penalty.
There were enough missed plays for Manning to lament.
His fumble on a sack late in the second quarter set up a crushing Saints touchdown that made it 34-17

They say football is a game of inches, but for the Giants, it has become a game of feet. The most famous one is Eli Manning’s sore right heel. But the chronically sore right foot of running back Ahmad Bradshaw is beginning to prove just as vital to the success of the offense.
It didn’t receive nearly as much attention, but Bradshaw was in the same boat with Manning last week, sitting out the key Wednesday and Thursday practices before going through Friday’s dress rehearsal. While Manning buoyed the Giants with his 83rd straight start Sunday, Bradshaw came off the bench to provide a big play nearly every time he touched the ball.
Bradshaw carried 11 times for 110 yards and scored twice in the first quarter to ignite the Giants’ 44-7 romp over Oakland. He turned his only reception into a 55-yard gain to set up their third TD in their first three possessions.
“I’ve been playing with this foot injury for years, and just to be able to keep going is all I want,” said Bradshaw, who explained he first hurt the foot as a freshman at Marshall. “I’ve been able to fight through it ever since. I may have missed two games.”
Bradshaw was on the bench for the first 13 plays of the opening drive, but Brandon Jacobs suffered a stinger while being stopped for no gain on third down at the Raiders 1-yard line. On fourth down, Bradshaw attacked the right side just as Jacobs did on the previous play, but he got lower and punched it in.
“It’s just leverage,” Bradshaw said.

The Plaxico Burress case is seemingly decided, and Antonio Pierce still isn’t saying much about it.
Pierce had plenty to say Monday about the New York Giants after their dismal second preseason game, but the middle linebacker refused to comment on his former teammate’s decision last week to plead guilty to a weapons charge and accept two years in prison.
With time off for good behavior, Burress will have to serve at least 20 months. His sentencing is set for Sept. 22.
“I am not talking about that,” Pierce said during a lunch break at the Giants training camp at the University of Albany. In the nine months since Burress accidentally shot himself in a Manhattan nightclub, Pierce has said very little about his role in the incident.

Eli Manning has agreed to a new six-year, $97 million contract extension with the New York Giants that will make him among the highest-paid players in the NFL with an average salary of roughly $15.3 million, a source told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen.
There is a chance the deal could be signed Wednesday, but both sides wanted to review the contract, The Associated Press reported.
Manning, who led the Giants to a Super Bowl upset of the New England Patriots in February 2008 and was named the MVP of the game, was in the final year of the contract he signed as the No. 1 overall pick in 2004. He will make $9.4 million under that deal this season.

In what is likely to be a popular topic of conversation at Giants training camp, coach Tom Coughlin was asked Monday about his expectations for a relatively inexperienced receivers unit.
The Giants currently have a total of 10 wideouts on their roster who combine to average less than three years of pro experience. Coughlin said he has seen enough from some of his young receivers to feel confident that they can fill that void.
“I expect them, even with the influx of the younger guys, I expect them to come along. They need to make a contribution,” Coughlin said. “I think we have some players that have been here, that have proven that they can play. They are solid players, we certainly need more out of all of those guys. We need some of these younger guys who we have invested in to step up and be contributors.”

In case you missed it late last week, Brandon Jacobs has already fired the first shot of the Giants-Cowboys rivalry, two full months before they’re scheduled to meet for the first time in 2009.
In an interview Thursday morning on The Brandon Tierney Show on ESPN Radio in New York, Jacobs – - the Giants’ bruising running back – - took some shots at Dallas quarterback Tony Romo. He said Romo is not “that great of a passer” and “his luck will be gone, sooner or later.”

The New York Giants’ wide receivers know what they’ll be facing this season. There will be doubters and haters, skeptics and cynics, and people who will wait to see just how this offense functions without veteran free agents Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer.
Their replacements realize they have much to prove. They see that their development is vital to the Giants’ chances of staying on top of the NFC East. But here’s the first thing the youngsters have going for them: diversity. While Burress was the top target and Toomer served as a dependable second option, this year’s targets offer a variety of eager weapons for quarterback Eli Manning. They have size (Domenik Hixon and Hakeem Nicks), quickness (Steve Smith and Mario Manningham) and speed (Sinorice Moss).
