Mix n Match: Giants Style

Posted by GameSetMatch on 25th August 2010

With Antonio Pierce gone from the Giants and newly acquired Keith Bulluck to take a chance at becoming the starting middle linebacker, only a psychic can predict the future for the starting linebacking core. Last season the Giants had a mix n match time with their linebackers and it seems like its starting over again during the pre-season. Its been said that the coaches have a new set of three linebackers every practice to see which they feel most comfortable with. The Giants are looking for their best three-man lineup at linebacker, which could mean moving Bulluck to outside linebacker as opposed to backing up Goff. The experiment could be an indication of the coaching staff’s confidence that Goff will be the starting middle linebacker. All I have to say is that the season is starting in a few weeks and they need to get situated so players can get accustom to playing with each other. Everyone has their own playing style and tendencies and flipping players screws up the team’s chemistry. The Giants need to settle on their starters and get their defense going.

Revis: C’mon Man

Posted by GameSetMatch on 16th June 2010

As the season gets closer, all I think about is what is Darrelle Revis doing? I understand that he wants to get paid as a big time player that he has proven to be but at the same time one season does not mean anything. Yes he did do work on the field but he has to prove himself once again to be worth all the money that he is asking for. I agree with him that he should be paid more but not the amount that he is asking for.

I believe that he just needs to get to practice, do his work and prove his wealth. Once he proves himself in practice he can use it as leverage to get the amount that he needs. At the end of all this I think he needs to prove himself this season because one season does not mean anything. He needs to go show that he is a valuable asset and his skills are not a one time deal.

A Minor Look at the 2010 New York Giants

Posted by GameSetMatch on 15th June 2010

Last year the New York Giants went 8-8 in a tough NFC east division. The main problem with the New York Giants was their defense. The Giants defense let up the most points in the NFC East at 427 points against. The Giants stepped up their defensive secondary by signing Antrel Rolle. Rolle has been a great player for the Arizona Cardinals helping them make it to a Super Bowl. He is definitely a key player that the New York Giants need for their secondary. Another area of their defense that needs to be looked at our adjusted before the beginning of the season is the linebacker positions. Once they get healthy, continuous starters, they will have a decent core to play with. The offensive line has been very steady and it seems that they will be good once again come this season. The Giants look poised to do well this season and I can see them finishing 2nd in their division with a playoff spot.

The Giants offense its a very good offensive team and will look to up their game next season. Brandon Jacobs played hurt throughout the ‘09 season and was effective at times. After his knee surgery, he will look to return to old form when he first arrived and create havoc on the field.

Revis Is An Idiot

Posted by boom on 8th June 2010

Darrelle Revis’s recent contract dispute with the New York Jets is expected to carry on for quite sometime until he or the Jets organization decides to budge. I do understand Revis’s point but his terms are ridiculous. Revis one of the best corners in the league wants a contract that will make him the highest paid cornerback in the league, people believe the numbers to be about $16 million a year. While Revis is one of the best he is not the best, Revis Island and all the un-explained media coverage definitely added to his self-believed worth.

Now as a Jet fan I have to worry about the organization not being able to sign their other notable free agents including Nick Mangold and others. If you ask me I think Revis needs to stop worrying about the money and play. I do not know the exact numbers being discussed but if its for example $13 million a year vs. $16 million he really needs to take a step back and look at the fact that he is already making a ridiculous salary while others in the country cannot find minimum wage jobs!

Jets 2010 Running Game

Posted by GameSetMatch on 1st June 2010

Last season, the Jets ran the ball 607 times, compared to only 393 pass attempts. Their leading rusher from 2009, Thomas Jones, is now a Kansas City Chief, and the question of who will carry the load for the Jets’ rushing game is on the minds of many of their fans.

The most obvious replacement for Jones’ production is Shonn Greene. As a 3rd round draft pick out of Iowa, Greene’s rookie season was largely quiet, as he rushed for 540 yards. In the playoffs, however, Greene rushed for 304 yards in only 3 games, and had several memorable touchdown runs which raised expectations for this season. Despite Greene’s impressive talent, however, he has shown weaknesses in the past. Last season, he fumble 3 times in only 108 carries, and he failed to record a reception. Despite these worries, however, Greene showed a combination of speed and power that has many Jets fans excited for his 2010 season.

While Shonn Greene appears to be entrenched as the starter, his backup will be one of the best running backs in NFL history. LaDainian Tomlinson, signed from the San Diego Chargers, will likely be featured as the Jets’ 3rd down back. In his prime, Tomlinson was one of the top pass-catching backs in the NFL, but it seems as if Tomlinson’s prime ended two seasons ago. Last season, Tomlinson appeared to have lost a step, as he averaged only 3.3 yards per carry for a dynamic Chargers offense. Tomlinson’s season ended against the Jets’ defense, as he rushed for only 24 yards on 12 carries. Heading into this season, Tomlinson’s ability will be called into question by most Jets fans. If he can return to the form that made him one of the best running backs of all time, then the Jets offense will feature two running backs who compliment each other well. If Tomlinson’s decline continues, however, the Jets offense will likely struggle on passing downs, or in the event of an injury to Greene.

One final wildcard in the Jets 2010 backfield is their 4th round pick, Joe McKnight. Heading into college at USC, McKnight drew comparisons to fellow Trojan Reggie Bush. Although he failed to match Bush’s college production, McKnight is still regarded as a shifty runner who could serve as an asset to the Jets’ offense. With the departure of Leon Washington to Seattle, the Jets will need a quicker running back to take over Washington’s role. Although McKnight did not make the best first impression by appearing out of shape at the Jets’ first rookie mini-camp, there is speculation that his familiarity with his college quarterback, Mark Sanchez, could help him get onto the field as a rookie.

With the continued development of Mark Sanchez, it’s likely that the Jets will throw the ball far more than they did last season. Despite this fact, however, the Jets will likely remain a running team. In order for the Jets to succeed, they will need their running game to remain a dominant force. With the presence of three talented running backs, there is no reason for the Jets not to have success, but all three backs have question marks that won’t be answered until they step onto the field to open the season.

Meadowlands: Super Bowl Bound

Posted by David on 26th May 2010

Yes, we are not even halfway through 2010. However, focus seems to have shifted all the way to 2014 for Super Bowl XLVIII (48 for those too lazy to read Roman numerals). This is because Super Bowl XL VIII will be held at the Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, home of the New York Giants and New York Jets.

Raymond James Stadium and Sun Life Stadium, both located in Florida, were the other two finalists that opposed Meadowlands Stadium. It is rare to see the National Football League elect to hold the Super Bowl in a location where the whether will likely be freezing.
The game will be held on February 2nd, 9th, or 16th. After broadcasting the upcoming Super Bowl, Fox will not be broadcasting a Super Bowl until they broadcast the one at Meadowlands Stadium.

This has, and will send the Metropolitan area into a frenzy. But one’s thing for sure- no matter if it is sunny, raining, or snowing, the Super Bowl will be held at the Meadowlands Stadium in 2014.

Ellis denied contract extension

Posted by GameSetMatch on 14th May 2010

First, Thomas Jones, then Alan Faneca. Will Shaun Ellis be the next over-30 veteran dumped by the Jets? He wonders.

Ellis, a defensive end, told the Associated Press Thursday his request for a contract extension was rejected by the Jets, leading him to believe he might not be with the team for the upcoming season. Ellis, 32, may have been dangled in trade talks before last month’s draft but is now not in danger of being jettisoned, according to a person familiar with the team’s thinking.

“I don’t know,” Ellis said. “I think so. Well, I hope so. You never know what they’re thinking up there. You’ve just got to roll with it. We try to control our own fate, but we really can’t.”

The Jets’ longest-tenured player, Ellis is due to make $3.35 million in the final year of his contract. He recorded 6½ sacks last season, bringing his career total to 68 and made the Pro Bowl as an alternate. Ellis has a troublesome knee, but the Jets are hoping to squeeze one more season out of him, especially with depth concerns at defensive end.

Lawrence Taylor Can’t Get Rid of His Bad Boy Image

Posted by homerunheyer on 13th May 2010

Just when everyone thought Lawrence Taylor was cleaning up his image, he breaks the law again! Taylor has been in the spotlight after his football career for all the wrong reasons. His list of criminal charges includes buying crack- cocaine from a police officer, possessing drug paraphernalia, filing false tax returns, and now he has been arrested with rape charges.

Taylor seemed to be cleaning up his image over the last few years most notably by appearing on the reality show “Dancing With the Stars”. The family friendly show boosts the image of anyone who appears on the show. Most of the contestants that appear on the show are usually there to revitalize their career or change their image for the better.

When i tell people who watch Dancing With Stars, that aren’t sports fans, if they know who Lawrence Taylor is they reply, “Yes, he is a great dancer, didn’t he used to play football?” Then when i tell them how great of a player he was for the New York Giants and how his career after the Giants has been riddled with controversy, people say, “I knew he played football, but I can’t believe he did all those other things! He seems like such a nice man!”

Taylor was back on top by leaving his past behind him and exposing himself to a new audience. Taylor had gained a sponsorship with Nutri-system, he started raking in the bucks again, There’s no way he’s messing up again…right?

Wrong! It was all a front! Taylor never changed his ways! Did he really think just because he turned his image around in the media that he could get away with the same old criminal acts like in the past?

With these newly developed rape charges Taylor may have permanently ruined his image. He had his one chance to make his image better again and he threw it away. Nutri-system dropped him as a sponsor, everyone who thought he was that nice football player on “Dancing With the Stars” now knows his old, true self, and now he can be facing some jail-time. It’s a sad case.

Jets, Giants make Bowl bid official

Posted by GameSetMatch on 12th May 2010

In making a bid to host the 2014 Super Bowl at New Meadowlands Stadium, the Jets and Giants are embracing the weather. It will be cold in New Jersey in February, but the teams contend that’s not a reason to reject the bid.

Team owners and notable players were at the site on a cold and rainy Wednesday to formally announce the bid. With half of the dismantled Giants Stadium looming next door, Lamping touted the indoor spaces for those who have the good seats in the 82,500-seat arena. The facility would have heated concourses and fans would be given handwarmers.

“One thing we know how to do in New York and New Jersey is deal with snow,” Jets owner Woody Johnson said.

Mark Sanchez, Curtis Martin and Nick Mangold joined Johnson for the Jets, with Eli Manning and Ottis Anderson standing by Giants owners Steve Tisch and John Mara.
