Unless he’s told otherwise, Joba Chamberlain anticipates being in the Yankees’ starting rotation in 2010.

Sure, he knows there’s never any guarantees. At least as a member of the World Series champions, Chamberlain has a shorter off-season – meaning less time to consider the winter what-ifs.

He’s already been receiving text messages and calls about the Hot Stove League.

“[It's] not so much the rumors part of things [I pay attention to], just kind of the way things are going to shape up, what’s going to happen and just the overall feel of [it],” Chamberlain said Tuesday afternoon.

With one day to absorb Joba Chamberlain’s last start, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that he saw no reason to administer a reality check to the young hurler. But the club does need to see better results, and in a hurry.


Though he said he was embarrassed by allowing seven runs to the Mariners in Sunday’s three-inning start at Safeco Field — a 7-1 Yankees loss — Chamberlain was relentlessly positive in dissecting his outing, using the word “great” several times and telling reporters his stuff “was all working, surprisingly.”

The comments drew plenty of attention from fans on talk radio and the Internet, but Girardi said on Monday that he believes Chamberlain — who has now lost a career-high four straight decisions — knows that the results are not acceptable.

Joba Chamberlain spilled the beans on the most recent secret chapter of the Joba Rules, saying on Wednesday that he expects to make six more starts during the regular season.

Chamberlain has been idle in anticipation of a start next Tuesday at home against the Rangers, when he’ll be pitching on eight days’ rest. The Yankees have staggered his late-season starts, hoping to have him finish near 160 innings.
“It’s better to know, just so you can kind of have it in your head,” Chamberlain said. “I expect the unexpected at all times now, but I now have an idea of what the plan is pretty permanently.”

NEW YORK — Joba Chamberlain went home to Nebraska over the All-Star break. He played with his 3-year-old son and just stayed away from baseball for a while.

“Probably the best four days I’ve had in my life,” he said. It also turned out pretty well for the New York Yankees. Chamberlain won for the first time in almost a month and the Yankees got home runs from Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez in a 2-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday, completing a three-game sweep of the AL Central leaders.
