The New York Yankees bolted from the dugout even before the last grounder was scooped up. After waiting nine years for championship No. 27, no one would dare hold them back.
“It feels better than I remember it, man,” captain Derek Jeter said. “It’s been a long time.”
Hideki Matsui tied a World Series record with six RBIs, Andy Pettitte won on short rest and New York beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 in Game 6 on Wednesday night, finally seizing that elusive title — the most in all of sports.
Paint the town in pinstripes! Nearly a decade after their dynasty ended on a blooper in the desert, the Yankees are baseball’s best again.
Matsui, the Series MVP, powered a quick rout of old foe Pedro Martinez. And when Mariano Rivera got the final out, it was ecstasy in the Bronx for George Steinbrenner’s go-for-broke bunch.

Mark Teixeira and Hideki Matsui shook the New York Yankees from their lumber slumber and sent the World Series to Philadelphia all tied up.
Teixeira and Matsui hit solo homers off familiar foe Pedro Martinez, backing a sharp performance by A.J. Burnett and giving the Yankees a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 2 on Thursday night.
“After yesterday, getting a win today was big,” Teixeira said.
A night after getting stopped by Cliff Lee in the opener 6-1, the Yanks bounced back from an early deficit, sparked by a pickoff throw from backup catcher Jose Molina, and won in the Series for the first time since taking a 2-1 lead against Florida in 2003.

Hideki Matsui had his swollen left knee drained and the Yankees are hopeful that the designated hitter will return to their lineup early this week.
Matsui had been held out of New York’s lineup for a second successive game as the Yankees dropped a 10-3 decision to the Mariners on Sunday. The 35-year-old has battled chronic knee issues all season, but he has not required draining since the club’s first homestand in April.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that he had planned to rest Matsui anyway for the series finale against the Mariners due to stiffness in the left knee.
Girardi was told by head trainer Gene Monahan that Matsui needed another day, and after having the draining performed, the manager suggested that Matsui would rest on Monday and could appear as early as Tuesday, when the Yankees play the second game of a three-game set against the Athletics.

NEW YORK — Hideki Matsui rounded third base, headed home and saw teammates gesturing upward with their hands.
“I was just going to step on home plate, just normally,” he said, “but they told me to throw my helmet. So I threw my helmet.” The usually reserved Japanese star homered off Jim Johnson in the ninth inning Monday night to beat the Baltimore Orioles and give the streaking New York Yankees 2-1 wins in three straight games for the first time in franchise history.

Hideki Matsui believes his swing feels the best it has all season, and the Yankees are reaping the rewards.
After taking Blue Jays rookie starter Brett Cecil deep for a three-run shot in the Yankees’ 10-8 win on Sunday, the 35-year-old slugger enters Monday’s series finale with home runs in three of his past four contests, including roundtrippers in back-to-back games.
