Here are my all-time best New York Mets By Position… When I picked my team, I only considered their contributions while a member of the Mets. If they played longer for the Mets, I gave them a slight bump in rankings since their impact on the Mets should be greater than someone playing only a couple seasons. As a general note, I started watching the Mets around 1985-86 so my choices will be biased towards Mets who have played in the 80s or later. My squad contains one player at each position, five starters and a relief pitcher/closer. I listed other people I considered in the running for each position. OK.. Here is my all-time Mets squad.

With all the scouting reports, video surveillance and word of mouth available to today’s hitters about today’s pitchers, nothing really prepares the uninitiated. First-hand exposure to tomorrow’s starter is essential. Unfamiliar pitchers almost always are at a significant advantage at least one time through the batting order.
Or, in the case of Johan Santana vs. the Rockies on Thursday afternoon, three times through the order. Before Thursday, none of the 229 starts, 1,673 innings or 25,837 pitches in Santana’s big league resume had involved the Rockies. But the two sides were introduced shortly after noon ET, and what followed was support for the notion that unfamiliarity breeds confusion.

The Mets have scored fewer than five runs 14 times in the past 19 games. They are averaging fewer than 2.3 runs per game while batting .196 in seven games since the All-Star break.
Manuel talked about the positives of getting the rotation back to ace Johan Santana’s spot on Friday at Houston, but added, “We need some offense, too.” Santana did not lose a game after the All-Star break last season and began the second half of 2009 with another gem, throwing seven scoreless innings in Atlanta for a win on Saturday.
