Omar Minaya’s longstanding philosophy is that he would never make a trade for the sake of making one. But as the Mets have slipped deeper into an injury-riddled malaise that is threatening to derail their season, Minaya sensed that he had to do something. An opportunity arose Friday, when the Mets and the Atlanta Braves swapped talented right fielders who had fallen out of favor in their organizations.

Heading to the Mets is Jeff Francoeur, a premier defender whose limitless potential and alluring right-handed pop may or may not be assets sufficient enough to outweigh a renowned lack of discipline at the plate. In return, the Braves receive Ryan Church, who never regained the level of production he showed last April and May before a second concussion ruined a once-promising season. Francoeur will be at Citi Field on Saturday and will bat fifth.
