The greatest Olympic athlete: Michael Phelps
Posted by kirsch17 on August 1st, 2012
It’s official, Michael Phelps is the greatest Olympian ever. The United States swimmer now has 19 medals to his name after winning gold in the 4×200 relay last night in London. After winning the most medals ever in a single Olympics 4 years ago in Beijing, it should come as no surprise to anyone that Phelps now has the most medals ever. Out of his impressive 19 medals Phelps has to his name, the more impressive aspect is that 15 of them are gold, and nine of them were won in individual races. Many people were saying that Phelps was losing it after finishing 4th in his first race in London, after barely making into the finals of the 400 IM, starting in lane 8, but the truth of the matter is Phelps said he was retiring from that race 4 years ago in Beijing and hadn’t trained for it…and still finished 4th. Did he get a medal? No, but finishing 4th in a race he hadn’t trained hard for is still really impressive. Michael Phelps has said that he is retiring after this year’s Olympic Games in London but there are still three more events Phelps has to swim in before he can throw in the towel on what has been an extremely successful career. Three more opportunities for him to have his all time medal count go into the 20s. Three more opportunities for him to prove to everyone who has any doubts that he is the greatest Olympic athlete of all time.
