Robinson fined for agent’s comments

Posted by GameSetMatch on 29th December 2009

Benched New York Knicks guard Nate Robinson was fined $25,000 by the NBA on Monday after his agent made a trade request.

Robinson has not played in the Knicks’ last 12 games. A two-time winner of the All-Star slam dunk contest, he has played in only 12 games this season and is averaging 11 points.

Agent Aaron Goodwin recently told reporters he’d asked the Knicks to move Robinson to another team. Robinson was fined for statements detrimental to the NBA.

“Players are not permitted to make trade requests publicly and are responsible for public statements relating to them made by their representatives,” NBA spokesman Tim Frank said.

Goodwin said the benching was personal, not basketball related. A day after Goodwin’s comments on Dec. 19, Knicks president Donnie Walsh said he would probably begin talks with the agent about a trade.

Moore, Stewart help Panthers end Giants’ playoff hopes

Posted by GameSetMatch on 28th December 2009

Justin Tuck has been to the mountain with the New York Giants, winning an NFL title. The defensive end and the rest of the Giants tumbled into a deep valley in their final game at Giants Stadium.

It was a complete embarrassment.

Matt Moore and the Carolina Panthers (7-8) turned the Giants’ 273rd and final game in the 34-year-old stadium into one of their ugliest moments in their franchise history with a 41-9 rout on Sunday.

Coupled with Green Bay’s win over Seattle and Dallas’ victory over Washington on Sunday night, the loss eliminated the Giants (8-7) from playoff contention for the first time in five years, something totally unexpected after a 5-0 start.

New York will close out the season next Sunday at Minnesota.

“It’s tough,” Tuck said after the Giants (8-7) lost for the seventh time in 10 games. “Like you said, we had everything at stake playing a team that was only playing for pride, and I guess pride won today. We should have been playing with a little pride ourselves.”

The Giants knew that they probably needed to win their final two games and hope that either Green Bay or Dallas lost one of their remaining two to get to the postseason.

Caldwell pulls starters in third with 5-point lead; Jets rally for win

Posted by GameSetMatch on 28th December 2009

Peyton Manning and the rest of the Colts accepted Jim Caldwell’s plan. The hometown fans didn’t like the imperfect ending one bit.

With Manning and a handful of other key players standing on the sideline hoping to save the Colts (14-1) from yet another second-half deficit Sunday, Caldwell never gave them a chance.

The New York Jets ended the Colts’ pursuit of perfection and their NFL-record 23-game winning streak with a 29-15 victory that had fans serenading Lucas Oil Stadium with boos and Manning, the three-time MVP, offering support for his coach’s decision.

“Until any player in here is the head coach, you follow orders and you follow them with all of your heart,” Manning said. “That’s what we’ve done as players. We follow orders. Our orders were not to give up a turnover, not to give up a kick return for a touchdown. There’s not many games, under any circumstances, that you win when you have turnovers and give up a kick return for a touchdown.”

Jacques Irked After ‘L’

Posted by TheHockeyGuy on 3rd December 2009

November is done, and so is the Devils’ six-game month of home perfection. Jacques Lemaire says December’s 0-1 Devils will skate, skate and skate some more today after last night’s flop.

“They need a good practice. We’ve been taking it easy on them, thinking they might be getting tired. Christmas is coming, everybody’s mind is somewhere else. We’ll try to put their minds back on the game,” Lemaire said after last night’s 5-2 loss to the Canucks in Newark.

Giving up a handful for only the third time this season, the Devils allowed the first three in the first 12:32 of play and never caught up, losing in Newark for the first time since Oct. 28.

“They played well, we didn’t, and that makes an ugly outcome,” Andy Greene said after the loss snapped New Jersey’s three-game overall winning streak.

The Devils fell behind 3-0 for the first time since losing 5-2 in their season opener to the Flyers Oct. 3 in Newark. They hadn’t allowed three goals in an entire game in Newark since that Oct. 28 4-1 loss to the Sabres, and the night’s five were most of the six-victory home streak’s total of eight goals allowed.

Rangers Fall Apart In Final 10 Minutes

Posted by TheHockeyGuy on 1st December 2009

The team that was going to dominate third periods because of the rigid summer conditioning regimen instituted by head coach John Tortorella somehow can’t find a way to get through the final 20 minutes of games.

No wonder the Rangers can’t win very many of them, either.

Last night’s first 50 minutes were far better than the twin disasters of Friday’s 5-1 loss in Tampa and Saturday’s 8-3 defeat in Pittsburgh, but that hardly provided solace to the Blueshirts when the Penguins scored three times, including an empty-netter, in the final 8:46 to send the freefalling Rangers to a 5-2 defeat at the Garden.

“It’s discouraging because we did a lot of good things and had a lot of good minutes, but we’re making big mistakes at key times and we’re not getting the big play we need to win games,” said Tortorella, whose team has been outscored by an aggregate 14-5 in the last nine third periods.

Niedermayer, Pandolfo Near Return For Devils

Posted by TheHockeyGuy on 1st December 2009

Devils coach Jacques Lemaire has spent weeks waiting for various injured players to get back onto the ice, and they are finally beginning to return to the lineup.

Center Rob Niedermayer should be the first reinforcement. Niedermayer is expected to play tomorrow night against Vancouver for the first time since he suffered a separated shoulder Nov. 4 against the Capitals.

“We’ll see [today],” Niedermayer said after yesterday’s practice. “Hopefully it feels good again. I’d like to get back in the lineup as soon as I can.”

Niedermayer, who began practicing last week, wasn’t the only recuperating player on the ice yesterday. Left wing Jay Pandolfo, who has been out of the lineup because of a dislocated right shoulder that he injured Oct. 24 against Pittsburgh, participated in his first full practice. Pandolfo was less optimistic about being able to suit up for tomorrow night’s game.
