Mark Teixeira and Hideki Matsui shook the New York Yankees from their lumber slumber and sent the World Series to Philadelphia all tied up.
Teixeira and Matsui hit solo homers off familiar foe Pedro Martinez, backing a sharp performance by A.J. Burnett and giving the Yankees a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 2 on Thursday night.
“After yesterday, getting a win today was big,” Teixeira said.
A night after getting stopped by Cliff Lee in the opener 6-1, the Yanks bounced back from an early deficit, sparked by a pickoff throw from backup catcher Jose Molina, and won in the Series for the first time since taking a 2-1 lead against Florida in 2003.

New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez is trying to turn Hot Dog-Gate into an opportunity to help the less fortunate in New Jersey.
Sanchez has bought 500 hot dogs and 500 hamburgers, along with buns and rolls, through A&P supermarket, and donated them to the Community Soup Kitchen of Morristown, N.J.
Sanchez was the subject of criticism — and he later issued an apology — when he was caught on camera Sunday eating a hot dog on the sideline during the Jets’ 38-0 victory against the Raiders.

The demeanor of the two starting quarterbacks at the end of the game summed it all up.
Mark Sanchez was sneaking a hot dog on the New York Jets’ sideline, while JaMarcus Russell watched solemnly as backup Bruce Gradkowski finished up another blowout loss for the Oakland Raiders on the other.
The Jets achieved their goal of taking pressure off their rookie quarterback, forcing four turnovers and running for 316 yards in a 38-0 victory over the Raiders on Sunday.
“It makes it so easy on the offense when your defense is playing like that,” Sanchez said.

After saying the Giants had to get back to their old smashmouth ways, Brandon Jacobs had his best game of the season last night, yet he saw the Giants go away from the run — a decision that cost them dearly in their 24-17 loss to Arizona.
And though Jacobs had 76 yards and a touchdown on just 13 carries, he refused to put the blame on offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride’s playcalling. Instead, he placed it squarely on the players.
“Not to take anything away from their defense, we just didn’t want it enough,” Jacobs said. “I don’t think they were able to really stop us. But we had to try and mix it up and do a bunch of different things, and that’s what happened. We have to go out and execute no matter what’s called. We didn’t want it enough.”

The season that is to be based on a renascent dedication to defense starts in seven days, so it might be a good time to check in with those who might be in a position to evaluate it.
The short version: It’s not where it should be.
The emerging belief is that the Nets have improved in three key areas as they displayed in Wednesday night’s 94-92 loss against the Knicks before 15,721 at Prudential Center. They were giving up fewer straight-line drives to the rim, yielding fewer open 3-pointers (especially in transition), and having fewer communication breakdowns.
“We’re getting better there in those areas, but we had to,” said resident defensive specialist Trenton Hassell. “We know that in order for us to have any success, we’re going to have to become a really good defensive team.

One idea would be for the Knicks to add an additional sweetener to make a trade for center Eddy Curry more palatable to another team.
For instance, Cuttino Mobley could be substituted for Darko Milicic in the trade I hypothesized in my previous article. Although Mobley earns more than Milicic ($9.5 million vs. $7.54 million) and his retirement ensures he will not contribute to the team to which he is traded, he nevertheless has one distinct financial advantage: 80 percent of Mobley’s salary, $7.6 million, is paid by insurance. If the Rockets were to trade Tracy McGrady for Curry and Mobley, their net savings would increase to about $12.6 million.
Of course, the Knicks could add other potential sweeteners to a Curry deal: additional players, future draft picks or cash. It all depends on how desperate Donnie Walsh, the team president, is to clear additional cap space for the 2010 free-agent market. But a Mobley trade also appears unlikely; Walsh has recently indicated that he is no longer interested in using Mobley as a trade piece.

The owners of the New York Mets baseball team made about $48 million in dealings with swindler Bernard Madoff, court documents showed.
The Mets Limited Partnership, which is connected to the Wilpon family, led by Mets owner Fred Wilpon, deposited $522.8 million in two accounts with Madoff and withdrew $570.6 million, according to a Monday filing by court-appointed trustee Irving Picard.
The Mets could not be reached immediately for comment by Reuters.
Earlier this year, Erin Arvedlund, author of “Too Good to Be True,” a book on Madoff, said the Wilpon family would be forced to sell the Mets due to huge losses suffered in the Madoff swindle.
The Mets had said Arvedlund has no knowledge of the team or its finances and repeated previous statements that the team was not for sale.

They were eager to prove that what occurred six days earlier was an aberration, that it was just a slight hiccup.
The Jets weren’t feeling like big shots coming off that Monday Night Meltdown, but they were confident that they were going to get things turned around Sunday against the Bills, a team that was reeling and had dropped its previous eight contests against AFC East opponents. This was supposed to be their get-well game, with the Bills providing the perfect fodder to pound into submission and cure their ills.
Never happened, though, and now the Jets are the team that’s reeling after a 16-13 overtime loss. The Jets have dropped three straight since their season-opening three-game winning streak.
In a game in which the Jets had several chances to put Buffalo away, they made too many miscues and not enough plays, failing to step on the Bills’ throats despite the countless opportunities.
Ryan Lindell banged a 47-yard field goal through with 2:44 left in overtime – making amends for a 46-yard miss at the end of regulation – to put the finishing touches on a stinging loss that left the Jets searching for answers.
“It’s unfortunate,” linebacker Bart Scott said. “We knew that team was going to come out and play hard. We knew they were a competitive group. We let one get away, but we have to go back and reanalyze ourselves. We’ll find out a lot about ourselves. There will be a lot of things said, and deservedly so. We deserve every negative thing that’s being said about us.”
There’s going to be a lot of negative things said about the Jets’ golden rookie quarterback, who had a stinker of a game. Mark Sanchez was a turnover machine, whipping ill-advised passes around and never getting into any sustained rhythm. He threw five interceptions and finished with a quarterback rating of 8.3, completing 10 of 29 attempts for 119 yards.

The emotions were understandably intense for Eli Manning, who grew up just a few miles from the Superdome yet had never played in the building his father, Archie, toiled in during the 1970s and ’80s.
Coming out of the tunnel in the moments before the game Sunday, he admitted to being more pumped up than usual.
“It’s a special moment for me to play in New Orleans, to be able to play in my hometown,” he said. “It’s something I was excited about.”
Unfortunately for Manning, the most enjoyable part of his day came before the game; after a 48-27 loss to his hometown team, the Giants’ quarterback left the Superdome crestfallen.
Manning had his moments — there was a 15-yard TD pass to Mario Manningham in the second that cut the Saints’ lead to 27-17. A TD pass to Brandon Jacobs in the fourth would have made it 41-24, but it was negated by a Shaun O’Hara holding penalty.
There were enough missed plays for Manning to lament.
His fumble on a sack late in the second quarter set up a crushing Saints touchdown that made it 34-17

As bad as the loss to the Bills was yesterday, the Jets were dealt a debilitating blow when they lost nose tackle Kris Jenkins to a left knee injury that could be serious, according to coach Rex Ryan.
Jenkins, the heart of the Jets’ defense, went down in the second quarter when teammate Shaun Ellis appeared to fall on the back of his leg in a pile-up at the end of a running play.
Jenkins wasn’t available for comment after the game, but he was seen limping out of the locker room with his left knee heavily bandaged.
