Pierce talks football, not Burress guilty plea

Posted by adam20 on 31st August 2009

The Plaxico Burress case is seemingly decided, and Antonio Pierce still isn’t saying much about it.
Pierce had plenty to say Monday about the New York Giants after their dismal second preseason game, but the middle linebacker refused to comment on his former teammate’s decision last week to plead guilty to a weapons charge and accept two years in prison.

With time off for good behavior, Burress will have to serve at least 20 months. His sentencing is set for Sept. 22.
“I am not talking about that,” Pierce said during a lunch break at the Giants training camp at the University of Albany. In the nine months since Burress accidentally shot himself in a Manhattan nightclub, Pierce has said very little about his role in the incident.

Jets hoping Sanchez’s performance a glimpse of greatness to come

Posted by adam20 on 31st August 2009

Two things Mark Sanchez showed here Saturday night left the New York Giants, NFL scouts in attendance, his teammates and his coaches alert and influenced:
1) Sanchez has fancy feet. He can dance his way out of trouble and create new passing lines and buy extra time and make it testy for defenders, even when it looks like they have him in a bind.
2) Sanchez is a better athlete than advertised. He entered the draft from USC considered a good athlete. He is showing against NFL competition that everyone should reconsider just where his athleticism ranks.

Sanchez joined a photo shoot with Giants quarterback Eli Manning prior to kickoff. By game’s end, Sanchez stole the frame: His passer rating was 104.0. Manning’s was 51.9.
“He played great,” Rex Ryan gushed, with a big wide grin that revealed just how happy he is to be a rookie head coach attached to this rookie quarterback. “I think we all feel good about our quarterback.”
Giants coach Tom Coughlin said of the Sanchez-Stuckey connection and score: “It was a heck of a play by the young quarterback just to stay alive…” It showed what gives Sanchez a chance to be a relevant factor in the NFL this season. It happened with 6:50 left before halftime.

Wright ready to return with new helmet

Posted by adam20 on 31st August 2009

His first round of batting practice complete, David Wright was casually jogging from first to second base Sunday morning when he was struck in the left leg by a ball hit by Luis Castillo. No problem. He paused, continued running after another pitch, then headed to the clubhouse to get a helmet.

The freak accident had little to do with the additional gear Wright retrieved. In the wake of the concussion he suffered Aug. 15, he has been told by doctors to wear a helmet during batting practice. He had forgotten.

Damon feeling better than ever at plate

Posted by adam20 on 31st August 2009

By his count, Johnny Damon figures he has hit five “iffy” home runs at Yankee Stadium this season, or roughly a third of the 17 homers he’s hit at home. More than the new stadium, however, Damon credits a better approach at the plate for all his power.

“The way my swing has felt this year, I feel like I should have more,” Damon said.
That’s saying something, considering that Damon’s two-run shot in the third inning on Sunday tied his career high of 24 homers, with more than a month left in the season.

‘Dreams are coming true’: Rookie Sanchez is Jets’ starting QB

Posted by GameSetMatch on 28th August 2009

The future is now for the new face of the New York Jets, Mark Sanchez. First-year coach Rex Ryan announced Wednesday that he had selected Sanchez to be the team’s starting quarterback, making him the first rookie scheduled to open a season under center for the Jets.

“This comes with a lot of responsibility,” Sanchez said. “As happy as I am, I know that this is just the beginning, and I’m just excited, really excited to get to play with such great players.” Sanchez, the fifth overall draft pick out of USC, beat out Kellen Clemens for the job and will make his regular-season debut Sept. 13 at Houston. “This is something I’ve always wanted to do, and dreams are coming true now,” Sanchez said. “It’s a special opportunity.”

Ryan, who made the announcement after practice, said early in training camp that he’d like to make a decision on a starter by the Jets’ third preseason game, which comes Saturday night against the New York Giants.

“I think Mark gives us the best opportunity to win,” Ryan said, “and I think that’s what I owe this franchise.”

Canty has yet to play for Giants due to hamstring injury

Posted by GameSetMatch on 25th August 2009

New York Giants defensive tackle Chris Canty is suffering from a tear in his hamstring, coach Tom Coughlin revealed Sunday. Canty, signed during the offseason as part of the Giants’ defensive line rotation, has yet to suit up for the team during the preseason.

Canty is one piece of a defense that is suffering from numerous injuries. Like Canty, two other offseason additions — linebacker Michael Boley and defensive tackle Rocky Bernard — have yet to play during the preseason. Boley is on the physically-unable-to-perform list with a hip injury, while Bernard (hamstring) just got off the non-football injury list and is expected to return to practice this week. Coughlin said Bernard could play against the New York Jets on Saturday.

Chamberlain reveals some Joba Rules

Posted by adam20 on 21st August 2009

Joba Chamberlain spilled the beans on the most recent secret chapter of the Joba Rules, saying on Wednesday that he expects to make six more starts during the regular season.

Chamberlain has been idle in anticipation of a start next Tuesday at home against the Rangers, when he’ll be pitching on eight days’ rest. The Yankees have staggered his late-season starts, hoping to have him finish near 160 innings.
“It’s better to know, just so you can kind of have it in your head,” Chamberlain said. “I expect the unexpected at all times now, but I now have an idea of what the plan is pretty permanently.”

Wagner eager to show Mets what he can do

Posted by adam20 on 20th August 2009

Billy Wagner has been in the Mets’ clubhouse since Sunday, and the closer, who underwent Tommy John ligament-replacement surgery last September, is getting a little eager.

“It’s not much fun to be healthy and watching,” Wagner said before Wednesday’s game with the Braves. “When you’re healthy and watching, it’s kind of depressing.” Wagner is back and healthy, 11 months after he last pitched in a game for the Mets. He is scheduled to be activated from the disabled list either Thursday or Friday.

Jeter, Yanks on roll heading to Fenway

Posted by adam20 on 20th August 2009

Derek Jeter’s wry sense of humor is often obscured by his business-first agenda of winning baseball games for the Yankees. The fun layer is on display more behind closed doors than for the general public.

He offered a glimpse earlier this week, when Jeter was given a half day off as the club’s designated hitter. Jeter cracked to manager Joe Girardi that if all he needed to do was DH, he could probably add another five years to his already-impressive Major League career. The remark was not serious, and besides, Jeter seems to be doing just fine where he is. When the Yankees hit Fenway Park on Friday to renew acquaintances with the Red Sox in the game’s top rivalry, Jeter will likely be at shortstop and — as usual — looking only one game and one series ahead.

Ellis suspended for Jets’ season opener, fined $100,000

Posted by adam20 on 19th August 2009

New York Jets defensive end Shaun Ellis was suspended without pay Monday for the team’s regular-season opener and fined $100,000 by the NFL for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

The 31-year-old Ellis was arrested in November and charged with possession of marijuana, speeding and driving without insurance after being pulled over by police in Hanover, N.J., a few miles from the team’s training facility in Florham Park.

“I wasn’t surprised,” Ellis said after the morning practice at SUNY Cortland. “I knew there was a possibility of that. The league made a decision. That’s what I have to go by and I have to accept it.”
