Manuel to give a slugger some rest
Posted by admin on July 1st, 2009
In the midst of a season-high five-game losing streak and a struggling offense, manager Jerry Manuel said adamantly Tuesday he expected to sit David Wright, and possibly Gary Sheffield. Sheffield is out of Wednesday’s lineup, but Wright — who has only sat one game this season — is in.
Initially, Wright, Sheffield and the rest of the Mets would have gotten Thursday off. But with a makeup game against Pittsburgh stemming from a rainout on June 3, that off-day has been lost. Manuel said he knew while looking through the schedule and probable pitchers that he didn’t want to sit Wright or Sheffield against a left-handed pitcher. Pirates left-hander Paul Maholm is scheduled to make the start Thursday, and with the game being played at 12:35 p.m. ET after a plane ride from Milwaukee, Manuel said he thought Wednesday was good of a day as any to sit his third baseman.
